Red Deer

We started our deer farm in December 1997 with  New Zealand hinds which were bred to German stags. Our vision is to breed top quality Red Deer primarily for Velvet Antler production and Hunt Preserves. A Yugoslavian bred stag was purchased in 1998 to improve our genetics, primarily to enhance the antler width and add "points" on our future stags, as well as adding length of loin for  superior  venison yield. While our primary goal isn't meat animals, we wanted to be able to offer for sale stock that would fulfill the meat aspect as well. Our "Boys" born in 1999 now show the size increase influenced by the German and Yugoslavian bloodlines of noted stags: Bondi, Johann, Sir Branco, and Sir Yugo. In the fall of 2000 we added a sire of English genetics (Furzeland) into our herd to enhance  our antlers for our future "Trophy" stags.

We elected to raise Red Deer because we felt it had several advantages compared to other farm animals. They are extremely hardy and adaptable to our climate in Maine. Labor requirements are low and they convert pasture to lean meat efficiently. Diverse markets ( Velvet Antler  production, meat, hunt preserves, breeding stock, hard antlers (used for decorative art projects, knife handles and furniture) allow Red Deer stags to live a longer life as they can provide income from antlers yearly. Their meat is low in fat, yet tender and tasty (without the gamey flavor). Best of all we do it because we LOVE IT!! It's provided us with adventure, entertainment, and beauty just outside our doorstep to enjoy each and every day.

Our venture began in 1995 when we glanced at a Red Deer farm during a leisure drive and our curiosity led to a passion. Our 155 acre farm had previously been a dairy farm years ago as well as a home for horses, goats, pigs, chickens, rabbits and anything else our children wanted. We visited several different deer farms, read books about deer farming, and then made the decision to pursue it after feeling confident that this was something we could actually earn a profit doing. We wanted to utilize our farmland in a sustainable fashion that could provide some additional income during our retirement years. A carefully planned pasture lay out with a simple means of handling, tagging and sorting the deer was the first priority as the deer retain their "wild" behavior and aren't always cooperative.  Red deer farming requires little labor input, making it possible for us to continue as we age. Our plan is to stay small, and utilize the best genetics we can afford to provide the customer with a quality product of superior value!
